Running a dog business has made me appreciate the importance of dog friendships. Dogs are deeply social animals and while human companionship is essential, dogs benefit greatly when they have regular, positive interactions with other dogs. Just like humans, dogs form bonds and these friendships can play a powerful role in their mental, emotional, and even physical wellbeing.
Why Dog Friends Matter:
Emotional Wellbeing: Dogs that enjoy time with familiar dog friends often show fewer signs of stress, boredom, and anxiety. Long-term companionship with other dogs can provide comfort and stability, much like close friendships do for humans.
Better Behaviour: Dogs that socialise regularly with other dogs tend to be more confident, well-adjusted, and better at reading social cues. Ongoing friendships can support healthy play, communication, and impulse control.
Physical Health: Studies show that socially enriched dogs (those who live with or regularly interact with other dogs) are more active and may even live longer, healthier lives.
Natural Instincts: Dogs are pack animals by nature. While every dog is different and not all enjoy group settings, many benefit from having a consistent dog companion they trust and enjoy.
What This Means for You:
Consider a Second Dog: If your dog enjoys the company of other dogs and your lifestyle allows it, bringing a second compatible dog into the home can be a great source of comfort and enrichment.
Support Long-Term Friendships: Dogs remember their friends. If your dog has a known playmate, a neighbour’s dog, a friend’s dog, or a regular daycare buddy, maintaining that connection can be valuable. Think of it as a canine best friend.
While many dogs love canine companions, others may prefer human-only homes or need careful introductions. Always consider your individual dog’s personality, age, and past experiences.
A well-socialised dog is often a happier, healthier dog. Whenever possible, support your dog’s need to build and keep meaningful relationships with their own kind.
